Information about mobile netwerks
As technological innovation continues in 4G and 5G, telecom providers are announcing that they will eventually turn off 2G. By provider and country, this has its own time frame.
What we know
- KPN (NL) will discontinue its 2G telemetry network at the end of December 2027.
- Vodafone (NL) says it will keep 2G on the air until at least the end of 2026.
- Orange (BE) guarantees 2G until at least 2028, Base and Proximus (BE) until at least 2027.
The timing of this phasing by provider is still constantly changing as many critical services and infrastructure still rely on 2G. The telecom companies will communicate further on this. Many KPN SIM cards stop working earlier and can still be replaced to more modern cards to work on 2G until the end of 2027.
Coverage of 2G is decreasing, as providers begin to adjust masts. What is already certain:
- Odido (formerly t-mobile) stopped using 2G in the Netherlands in mid-2023.
- The 3G network in the Netherlands has already been deployed; in Belgium it will be in 2025.

Devices connected to the Mobeye Portal with the Mobeye sim card have the longest usage time in prospect, because the Mobeye sim card may switch to any available network. If it is a 2G device, this applies as long as one provider continues to offer 2G. The question is whether this will provide sufficient coverage, and thus whether communications will remain reliable. We recommend replacing 2G devices in the Netherlands with 4G devices before the end of 2025.
If there is now an “own sim card” in the device, you can stretch the lifespan a little by switching to another provider, or still to the Mobeye Sim/Portal. You can ask us to send you a sim card which you can activate online (see here for price information). Please mention your Mobeye device type and preferably also serial number or software version.
As soon as 2G goes away, you can switch to a Mobeye 4G product. For all products there is an alternative. Please consult us for advice or a replacement offer.
